New Report on National Strategies for Data Literacy in Education Across Europe

The EVIDALI project has published Mapping Analysis of National Strategies for Data Literacy in Education. This report provides an in-depth overview of how European countries are addressing the growing need for data literacy in schools. Based on a questionnaire distributed to ministries of education and complemented by desk research, the analysis identifies existing strategies, gaps, and emerging trends in policy efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of schools and educators to use data effectively and safely.

The findings reveal that policy approaches to data literacy remain fragmented and diverse across Europe. While some countries, such as Spain, have comprehensive strategies focused on data protection and school readiness, others like Latvia and Switzerland embed data literacy within broader digital education frameworks. The Netherlands is taking a curriculum reform approach, integrating digital and data literacy as a core learning area. These strategies vary in scope, from fostering data-driven decision-making and ethical data use to preparing teachers for the challenges of AI and digital transformation.

The report underscores the urgency of developing coherent and future-proof policies to support schools in managing and applying data responsibly. It highlights key challenges, including limited institutional capacity, overlapping policy domains, and the need for teacher training. By mapping current efforts, EVIDALI aims to inform subsequent project activities such as case studies, good practice collections, and the development of an online course for educators."
